Graz is a delightfully relaxed city situated in south-eastern Austria. It is set around the banks of the Mur River and the old town centre with its red roofs it is dominated by the Schlossberg, the hill that rises above it. Gaz is also a vital business location and as a center of science, research and culture.
Graz was Europe's Cultural Capital 2003 and is full of art and culture. You can experience high culture in the opera house and Schauspielhaus (city theatre) but also cabaret, traditional folk music, jazz, rock or techno. On top of this there are a lot of different festivals in Graz through out the year such as the "Styriate", "Styrian Autumn" (Steirischer Herbst), "Jazz Summer", "La Strada", or "Classics in the City". There are many places to eat and drink in Graz. Local cooks and caterers offer a wide variety of culinary pleasures, be it Styrian, Mediterranean or something more exotic. Above the savory delights you will find pastry and candy shops on just about every corner.
Graz has orver 290,000 inhabitants and has a long tradition in being a good place for students. There are six universities with over 40.000 students. It has one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe. In 1999 the city centre of Graz was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites.
